So you are looking to capture memorable photos of your feline friend in the comfort of your own home and would like to get the most out of this experience? As your cat portrait photography expert, I want to ensure that your photo session is both enjoyable and successful.

With much judgement from my cat, Leroy, I’ve spent a lot of time photographing people and their fur-babies, but you know as well as me that cats can be wary of new people in their home. All that to say, it’s a good idea to take the time to prepare your home, your cat and you! To help your cat portrait photography session go smoothly, I’ve put together some tips and tricks that I’ve learned over the years as a pet photographer:

A clean home makes for a great backdrop to make sure your cat is the centre of attention!

Preparing your home

  • 1. Choosing the right location for your cat portrait photography session is crucial. Choose a room that your cat frequents often, perhaps a sunny window ledge or a cosy couch, anywhere that your cat is most comfortable. Ensure that all other doors are closed – especially to the rooms that have hard-to-access hiding spots. The last thing you want is for your cat to go into hiding under the bed or the basement!
  • 2. Declutter the area we will be taking photos. Put the cat-toys away, fold blankets, and make sure your home is photo ready. Prepare for your photo session by having your cat’s favorite toys and treats nearby. A feathered cat wand is a great toy to catch the attention of your cat and put some playfulness into the photos.

Preparing your cat

  • 3. Wondering how to prepare your cat for your cat portrait photography session? Don’t expect your cat to sit on command, but some training brush up will help things go smoother when a camera is pointed their way.  Try using treats or positive reinforcement to get your cat to sit in a particular spot, like a piece of paper, a bed, or even your lap.
  • 4. Not every cat enjoys being picked up, but practice can make all the difference. Holding your cat—even for short periods—can result in a stunning photo of the two of you together. If your cat tends to resist, try standing in front of a mirror. The reflection can act as a fun distraction for your feline.

Preparing you

  • 5. You’re part of the photo too, so it’s important to look your best! When it comes to clothing, contrasting colors can help your cat’s fur stand out. For example, if you have an orange tabby, try wearing navy or black. For lighter-furred cats, bold solid colors work great. You can also match your outfit to your cat’s eye color for a cohesive look. Avoid wearing stripes or busy patterns, as these can be distracting in photos.
