A Perfect Day for Paws: the 2025 Walk for Animals

This past Saturday, May 3, I had the joy of attending the Animal Humane Society’s Walk for Animals at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds—and what a day it was! After years of unpredictable spring weather, this year finally delivered sunshine and warmth, making it the busiest and most vibrant Walk I’ve ever experienced. Thousands of animal lovers and their pets gathered for this heartwarming event, which is the AHS’s largest and most important fundraiser of the year.

A Personal Tradition

This was my third time attending this incredible event and my second time volunteering. Every time I go, I’m blown away by the energy, love, and dedication shown by everyone in attendance. Whether walking with a four-legged best friend or simply showing support, the crowd radiates positive energy and compassion for animals in need.

So Many Animals—Not Just Dogs!

One of the most joyful parts of the Walk is seeing the amazing variety of animals that show up. Of course, there are hundreds upon hundreds of dogs—big, small, fluffy, sleek, every breed and mix you can imagine. But it’s not just a dog day! This year, there were also plenty of cats, both in stylish carriers and confidently strutting on leashes.

Even more exciting? We spotted llamas, a Highland cow, snakes, hamsters, bunnies, and guinea pigs! It’s such a fun reminder of how much love people have for all kinds of animals and how diverse our pet-loving community really is.

Shop, Snack, and Spoil Your Pet at the International Bazaar

The International Bazaar at the fairgrounds transforms into a pet lover’s shopping paradise during the event. It becomes the home to dozens of amazing local vendors offering everything from homemade treats and custom collars to pet apparel and artwork. There are also tons of free goodies—treat samples, swag bags, bandanas, and more.

Whether you’re looking to treat your pup to a new toy, pick up some locally-made pet products, or just discover a new small business, the Bazaar is a must-visit. It’s a fantastic way to support the local pet community while having fun.

A Celebration of Compassion

Beyond the walk and the shopping, the event itself is a full-blown celebration of kindness and community. There’s live music, food trucks, games, and even a pet costume contest. It’s a joyful, come-as-you-are kind of day that celebrates the unique bond between people and their pets.

Every dollar raised helps the Animal Humane Society provide vital care to animals across Minnesota. From medical treatments and shelter to behavior support and adoption services, this event truly powers life-saving work.

One of the Twin Cities’ Biggest Pet Events

The Walk for Animals is one of the most attended pet events in the Twin Cities—and it’s easy to see why. The atmosphere is welcoming, the cause is meaningful, and there’s something for everyone. If you’ve never been, I can’t recommend it enough. Whether you walk, donate, or just soak it all in, you’ll leave with a full heart and probably a few pet hairs in your pocket.
